Phuket is Thailand's most-visited island and its most misjudged: dismissed as overrun by people who saw one beach road, adored by people who learned its layout. It's the size of Singapore — there are a dozen Phukets, and choosing yours is the whole game. This site is the map.

Most first trips are booked around a hotel photo and a flight time; most best trips are booked around a temperament. A surf-and-quiet person and a nightlife-and-neon person can both have the trip of their lives here — on opposite coasts, in different weeks, doing almost nothing the same. None of this is a checklist to complete.
