Underwater Phuket

Phuket is Southeast Asia's great dive doorstep: a mature school scene for beginners, boat access to the Andaman's classic sites, and the launch point for Similan liveaboards that divers cross the world for.

• The Chalong-area dive scene teaches in every major language, and entry courses run year-round — pool-and-boat packages with the certification agencies' standard curricula;
• Choose schools on safety culture, not price: small groups, well-kept gear, instructors who brief like professionals. Ask how many students per instructor and watch how the answer is given;
• Never dived? A supervised intro-dive day answers the “is this for me?” question cheaply.

The local circuit

• Racha Yai & Noi: clear-water staples for training and easy days;
• Shark Point, Anemone Reef & the King Cruiser wreck: the classic day-trip trio — soft corals, leopard sharks on good days, and a famous ferry wreck;
• Phi Phi sites: combinable with the scenery run (day trips);
• The Similans (park season roughly Oct/Nov–May): the headline act — granite boulders, clear blue, and the liveaboard trips (typically 2–4 nights from the Khao Lak side) that own space on serious divers' lists.

Snorkel honesty & reef manners

• Shore snorkelling on Phuket itself is modest — headland corners on calm days; the good gardens are a boat ride out;
• Green-season seas cancel and churn: buy trips on conditions, not calendars;
• Reef rules always: touch nothing, stand nowhere, feed nothing, reef-safe sunscreen — and choose operators whose briefings say the same.
